The first pianos were large and therefore called grand pianos. When you compare a well designed upright and a small baby grand piano the key length is not very different. Baby grands look fabulous in the corner of a large room or hallway but are they a good choice or are they too much of a compromise. A baby grand is anything under 5 2 a small grand is classified as anything under 6 and a grand is classified as 6 and above.
Prices of grand vs. Some upright pianos have become very creative in finding ways to extend the length of keys. I ve played in 4 different models two completely new and the other two with 5 and 10 years of use. In contrast the grand piano retains the shape of the original pianoforte in which the strings are strung horizontally and has a greater potential for expression.
